How to Plan a Small Feature Before Coding
Small features do not need heavy planning, but they do benefit from a few minutes of clear thinking before code changes begin. The goal is not to create a formal specification. The goal is to prevent avoidable rework. A lightweight plan is especially useful when a feature touches routes, content, metadata, styling, and navigation at the same time. Small changes can spread quickly if you start coding without naming the outcome first.

Define the user-visible outcome
Start by writing what the user will be able to do after the feature exists. This keeps the work tied to behavior, not implementation details.
For example, users can filter articles by category is clearer than add category logic.
Good outcome statements are concrete:
- "Visitors can open a category page and see only articles in that category." - "Readers can find the contact email from the main navigation." - "The sitemap includes every published article page."
Weak outcome statements are implementation-heavy:
- "Refactor article code." - "Add category stuff." - "Improve SEO."
Implementation details matter later, but they should support a visible result. If you cannot describe the result in plain language, the feature may not be ready to build.
List the files likely to change
Before coding, identify the likely surface area. Routes, data files, styles, metadata, tests, and documentation may all be affected.
This helps you avoid surprise changes and makes the final review easier.
The list does not need to be perfect. It only needs to make the work less foggy. For a content feature, the affected files might include a route page, content loader, article index, sitemap, and home page links. For a UI feature, it might include a component, stylesheet, test, and page that uses the component.
Writing the likely file list also helps you spot risk. A change that seemed small but touches ten unrelated areas may need a slower review. A change that only touches one Markdown file can move faster.
Decide what is out of scope
Small features become large when every related idea sneaks in. Add a short out-of-scope note before coding.
For example:
- In scope: category landing pages for existing article categories. - Out of scope: search, tags, author pages, CMS integration, and analytics events.
This does not mean the out-of-scope ideas are bad. It means they should not silently attach themselves to the current change. Clear boundaries help you finish.
Choose the simplest data shape
For small static sites, a simple array, markdown file, or typed object is often enough. Avoid adding a database or service before the need is real.
The best early implementation is the one you can understand quickly next month.
A good data shape matches the current workflow. If one developer edits articles in Git, Markdown files may be perfect. If several non-technical editors need to publish daily, a CMS may be more appropriate. If the feature needs user-specific state, a database may be necessary.
Do not choose infrastructure because it sounds professional. Choose it because the feature needs it. Many early features become easier when the data stays local and visible.
Identify edge cases early
You do not need to solve every edge case before coding, but you should name the obvious ones. Edge cases are cheaper to handle when they influence the design from the start.
For a category page, edge cases might include an unknown category slug, an empty category, long article titles, and duplicate slugs. For a contact form, they might include missing email, spam submissions, failed delivery, and privacy expectations.
Write down the few cases that would embarrass the feature if missed. That gives you a practical verification list later.
Decide how to verify it
Every feature should have a way to prove it works. That may be a unit test, a build, a lint check, or a short manual checklist.
If you cannot describe how to verify the feature, the requirement may still be too vague.
Verification should match the risk. A small copy change may only need a browser check. A route-generation change may need a production build. A shared utility may need tests. A visual layout change may need desktop and mobile review.
Useful verification notes sound like this:
- Run lint. - Run production build. - Open `/categories/developer-tips`. - Confirm unknown categories return the expected page. - Check mobile layout for long titles.
These notes make the final review faster because you already know what evidence matters.
Leave a short implementation note
Before coding, write two or three sentences about the intended approach. This is not bureaucracy. It helps future you understand why the change was made this way.
For example: "Use Markdown files for article content because the site is static and early-stage. Keep category routes generated from the same content source so the sitemap and article index stay consistent."
That kind of note can prevent a later refactor from accidentally breaking the reason the original design worked.
