How to Keep a Next.js Project Simple

Next.js can support complex applications, but many projects work better when they stay simple for as long as possible. A content site, portfolio, documentation hub, or early product landing page often needs clear pages and reliable builds more than it needs a sophisticated architecture. Simplicity is not the same as avoiding good engineering. It means choosing the smallest design that solves the current problem and remains understandable when you return to it later.

Prefer static routes when possible

If a page can be generated from local content at build time, keep it static. Static pages are fast, easy to deploy, and easier to reason about.

For content-heavy sites, static generation is often enough for a long time.

Static pages are especially useful for articles, category pages, about pages, privacy pages, and simple landing pages. They do not need a database request on every page view. They are also easier to cache and less likely to fail because an external service is temporarily unavailable.

Before adding server-side behavior, ask what needs to change per request. If the answer is "nothing" or "only when the site is rebuilt", static generation is probably enough. Dynamic behavior can come later when the product actually needs accounts, payments, dashboards, personalization, or frequently changing data.

Avoid early abstractions

Do not create a generic system before you have repeated patterns. A little duplication is acceptable while the project is still learning what it wants to become.

Refactor when the repetition becomes real and annoying, not when it is only imagined.

Early abstractions often hide the shape of the product before the product has finished forming. A flexible content engine, universal card component, custom design system, or generic data layer can feel responsible, but it may slow down simple changes.

A useful rule is to wait for the third real use. The first version proves the feature. The second version reveals whether the pattern is actually shared. The third version gives enough information to extract a helper or component without guessing too much.

Keep routes and folders obvious

Folder structure is part of the user interface for developers. A simple project should let someone guess where a page or piece of content lives.

For example, article content can live under a content folder, article pages can live under the articles route, and category pages can live under the categories route. That structure may not be the most abstract, but it is easy to navigate.

Avoid placing business content deep inside unrelated component folders. If content is the main product, make the content easy to find.

Keep dependencies rare

Every dependency adds maintenance, upgrade risk, and mental overhead. Before installing one, ask whether the platform or existing code can solve the problem simply.

Small sites often need fewer packages than expected.

Dependencies are not bad. They are valuable when they handle a hard problem well. But a package for a tiny formatting helper, a small UI behavior, or a one-off utility can be more cost than benefit.

Before adding a dependency, check:

- Is the problem complex enough to justify it? - Is the package actively maintained? - Does it work with the current framework version? - Does it affect bundle size or build reliability? - Can the same result be achieved with a small local helper?

The answer will not always be "no". The point is to make the choice deliberately.

Put content where editors can understand it

If content is the main product, keep it in a format that is easy to read and edit. Markdown files are often a good fit because they work with Git and static builds.

The code should serve the content, not bury it.

For an early content site, Markdown has several advantages. It is portable, readable in a normal editor, easy to version, and simple to review in pull requests. It also keeps publishing separate from layout code.

A database becomes more attractive when non-technical editors need an admin interface, when content changes many times per day, or when user-generated content becomes important. Until then, local content files can be a strong choice.

Keep styling predictable

Visual polish matters, but a small site can become difficult to maintain if every page invents its own layout rules. Use a small set of spacing, typography, and layout patterns. Reuse them intentionally.

Predictable styling helps prevent mobile overflow, inconsistent cards, and pages that look like they belong to different projects. It also makes future improvements easier because the design surface is smaller.

Add complexity at clear pressure points

Complexity should arrive in response to a real pressure. Add a CMS when editing content through Git becomes painful. Add a database when static files no longer match the data model. Add analytics when there is enough traffic to learn from. Add authentication when users need private state.

This approach keeps the project moving without locking it into premature decisions. A simple architecture that can be understood is usually easier to evolve than a clever architecture nobody wants to touch.
