Developer Checklist Before Deploying a Small Website

Small websites do not need complicated infrastructure, but they do need a few basics before going public. A personal project, content site, landing page, or small business site can look unfinished if one important route is broken, the mobile layout overflows, or the contact page still contains placeholder text. The goal of a pre-deploy checklist is not to make the launch perfect. It is to catch the issues that damage trust quickly. A small website should load, explain itself, work on mobile, provide basic trust pages, and be easy to maintain after the first release.

Check the public pages first

Before tuning anything, click through every public route. Confirm that the home page, about page, privacy page, contact page, sitemap, and robots file load correctly.

Broken links hurt trust quickly. They also make it harder to debug later because you may confuse routing issues with deployment issues.

Do this as a visitor, not as the developer who already knows the project. Start from the home page and navigate using only visible links. If an important page is only reachable because you know the URL, the site structure is probably too hidden.

For a small content website, check at least:

- Home page. - About page. - Contact page. - Privacy policy. - Article index. - Individual article pages. - Category pages. - Sitemap and robots output.

If the site has old test pages, unfinished experiments, or empty pages, remove them from navigation and from the sitemap until they are ready.

Review metadata and titles

Every important page should have a clear title and description. The title should identify the page. The description should explain the value in a way a search result can show.

Avoid using the same generic metadata everywhere. Duplicate metadata is not fatal, but it wastes an easy chance to help users and search engines understand the site.

Open a few pages and inspect the browser tab title. Then check the generated metadata if your framework provides a way to view it. A common mistake is to configure good metadata for the home page but leave articles, categories, and utility pages with generic defaults.

A practical metadata review should answer:

- Does the page title match the actual page? - Does the description describe the content honestly? - Does the canonical URL point to the preferred page? - Do social preview tags exist for important pages? - Are article pages using their own title and description?

Metadata does not replace useful content, but it helps good content present itself clearly.

Test on a narrow screen

A page that looks good on a large monitor can still fail on a phone. Check navigation, long words, buttons, headings, and article layouts on a small viewport.

You are looking for overflow, hidden text, impossible tap targets, and sections that require awkward zooming.

Mobile issues are common on simple sites because developers build on large screens. Long article titles, email addresses, code snippets, and navigation items can overflow their containers. Cards can become too narrow. Buttons can wrap awkwardly or become too small to tap.

Use a real phone if possible, or at least a narrow browser viewport. Check the first screen, the navigation, the article body, and the footer. If the site has category filters or article cards, make sure they remain readable when stacked vertically.

Check accessibility basics

Accessibility does not have to be complicated for a small launch. Start with fundamentals that improve the experience for many users.

Make sure headings follow a logical order, links have descriptive text, color contrast is readable, focus states are visible, and images have useful alt text when they convey information. If an image is purely decorative, it should not create noise for assistive technology.

Keyboard navigation is also worth a quick test. Use the Tab key to move through links and controls. If you cannot tell where focus is, visitors using a keyboard may struggle too.

Verify content quality and trust pages

For content sites, deployment is not only a technical event. It is also a publishing event. Read the pages that explain the site: about, contact, and privacy.

The about page should explain what the site is for. The contact page should provide a working contact method. The privacy policy should describe data collection honestly, especially if analytics, advertising, forms, or third-party embeds are used.

Article pages should not look like placeholders. Remove "coming soon" language from pages that are meant to rank or be reviewed. If a page is not useful yet, keep it out of the public launch.

Keep launch simple

A small website does not need authentication, dashboards, custom analytics, or a backend on day one. Launch the static version first and add complexity only when there is a real need.

The best early deployment is boring: it builds, routes are static, content is readable, and users can contact you.

Complexity creates more places for a launch to fail. A static content site with good pages is often stronger than a half-finished application with many features. Add databases, accounts, dashboards, and automation after the public foundation is working.

Run production checks

Development mode can hide problems that production mode reveals. Before deploying, run the same checks your deployment platform will run if possible.

For a JavaScript site, that often means linting and creating a production build. Watch for type errors, missing files, invalid dynamic routes, broken imports, and generated page failures. If the build output lists routes, scan it to confirm that expected pages were generated.

After deployment, open the production URL and repeat a smaller version of the checklist. A site can pass locally and still fail because of environment variables, case-sensitive file paths, or deployment settings.

Quick checklist

  • Visit every public route.
  • Check titles and descriptions.
  • Verify sitemap and robots output.
  • Test mobile layout.
  • Check basic accessibility.
  • Confirm trust pages are complete.
  • Run lint and production build.
  • Open the deployed URL after release.
